Language is a vehicle of thought. A single word cannot communicate all that one wishes to say. Several words are necessary.

A Phrase is a combination of two or more
words used to express an idea. For example, the word
    “Tree”.

This is a single word which refers to the idea
of a tree. But we know nothing more from this
one word. Hence, it is not a phrase.

“The girls in uniforms.......” This is a phrase which
tells you something about the girls. As they are
in their uniforms, they are apparently going to school.

“Come”. Though this is a single word, the pronoun
‘You’ is understood. So, in reality, it is “You Come”.
Hence, it may be considered as a phrase.

    “hills white swimming plantain......”

Though there are four words in the above
example, they have no relationship to one another,
nor do they make any sense. Hence, this cannot be
    considered as a phrase.

This lesson explains the relationship between the
words in a phrase. Phrases are of different types.
    Some phrases can be sentences.

The words in a phrase can be classified as
nouns, verbs, suffixes and adjectives. The relationship
between these words is of two     types
    -Vettumaippunarchi and Alvazhippunarchi. Of these,
Vettumai is again divided into six and Alvazhi into
fourteen. Vettumaith Thodar and Alvazhith Thodar
in turn, can appear as Thazhuvu Thodar and
    Thazhaath Thodar.

If the meaning of a phrase is complete, it becomes a sentence. Sentences are classified into four types, based on their meaning. Sentences can also be simple, complex or compound, depending on their structure.

All these details are given in this lesson. Learn them carefully. You can then understand all about phrases and sentences.
